Luis Lizcano-Sandoval is a marine biologist and biological oceanographer with experience in fields such as marine & coastal ecology, climate change, and remote sensing. Luis received his Bachelor’s degree in Biology from the University of Valle (Colombia), then received a Master’s degree in Marine Science and Limnology from the National Autonomous University of Mexico. Recently, he obtained a PhD in Marine Science at the University of South Florida. He was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship for his doctoral studies in the United States. His current research involves the use of multispectral satellite imagery to map distribution and detect changes in blue carbon ecosystems such as seagrass meadows, coastal wetlands and mangroves at large temporal scales in the Mexican Caribbean, Cuba, Gulf of Mexico, and the Florida peninsula; and the evaluation of past and future climate change impacts on those coastal habitats. Luis supports the Environmental Mapping Team at SIG in capacity-building projects in the Caribbean and South-America, Google Earth Engine trainings, and remote sensing applications on land and coastal areas. Luis enjoys scuba diving, sports, nature, and drinking Colombian coffee. He speaks Spanish and English.
