  • Coordinate technical design and implementation of GEE- and GCP-based projects, contributing to architectural patterns, implementation approaches, and quality standards.
  • Provide technical guidance and review for GEE scripts, methodologies, and cloud-based geospatial workflows in collaboration with other team members.
  • Support Google Cloud infrastructure planning and management for geospatial projects, including performance and cost considerations.
  • Provide Google Cloud technical expertise in support of SIG’s Google Cloud Partnership; professional certification will be required within one year if not already held.
  • Collaborate with product management and project leads to translate analytical and client requirements into robust technical implementations.
  • Support proposal development and partner discussions through technical scoping, methodology descriptions, and feasibility assessments.
  • Contribute to documentation of methods, workflows, and best practices for GEE and cloud-based geospatial analysis.

Requirements

  • At least 4 years of relevant experience in geospatial programming, remote sensing, or cloud-based spatial analysis (required).
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in a relevant field (required).
  • Extensive experience with Google Earth Engine (JavaScript and Python APIs) (required).
  • Preference given to candidates who already hold Professional GCP Certification.
  • Experience providing technical guidance within a geospatial or analytical team.
  • Experience designing and implementing geospatial workflows on Google Cloud Platform.
  • Strong understanding of remote sensing, spatial data processing, and geospatial analysis methods.
  • Experience with additional geospatial tools and platforms (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS, R, Python).
  • Experience with applied machine learning in geospatial contexts.
  • Passion for climate- and environment-related issues

Application Deadline

Interviews will be on a rolling basis. Applications will be continuously reviewed until suitable candidates are identified.

LLM Developer (early-career) - Environmental Mapping Team

SIG is seeking an early-career Large Language Model (LLM)/ Natural Language Processing (NLP) Engineer to join our GeoAI team. The ideal candidate will be able to independently develop and help guide implementation of AI tools that support environmental research, decision support systems, and policy analytics. This role is ideal for a researcher or developer interested in applying natural language processing and large language models (LLMs) to Earth and environmental science domains. The LLM/NLP Engineer will design, implement, and evaluate language-based AI tools to advance environmental research and decision-making. Responsibilities include developing and fine-tuning LLM and NLP models tailored to geospatial, environmental, and policy datasets, as well as building pipelines for document processing, knowledge extraction, and semantic search across diverse sources such as scientific literature and spatial metadata. The engineer will contribute to frameworks for interpretable and responsible AI, collaborating closely with SIG scientists, data engineers, and remote sensing specialists to integrate NLP capabilities into decision-support workflows. Additionally, the role involves developing and deploying prototype AI-driven applications, such as environmental chatbots, document summarizers, and knowledge graph tools, that enhance access to and understanding of complex environmental information.

SIG’s projects are focused on codevelopment and prioritize the use of open-source data and tools. Therefore, familiarity with these frameworks is essential. Previous experience in projects involving climate change impact mitigation, forestry management, land cover mapping, geospatial technologies, precision agriculture, remote sensing, and GeoAI will be highly beneficial.

This position will be full-time and fully remote. However, candidates must be based in a United States-compatible time zone to ensure effective collaboration.

Responsibilities

  • Design, test, and iterate on human-centered and responsible LLM-powered tools and workflows to support environmental research, analysis, and decision-making
  • Build pipelines for document processing, knowledge extraction, and semantic search from diverse sources (scientific literature, reports, and spatial metadata) using retrieval-augmented generation or other knowledge access frameworks.
  • Integrate LLMs into applications, notebooks, or internal tools using APIs and open-source models
  • Assist with fine-tuning or adapting models for domain-specific use cases
  • Evaluate data quality and help identify gaps or biases in training and reference data
  • Test LLM outputs for accuracy, consistency, bias, and usability
  • Develop robust evaluation frameworks (manual reviews, benchmark prompts, automated checks)
  • Document data sources and processing steps to support reproducibility
  • Assist in the definition of project scopes and objectives, ensuring technical and timeline feasibility on LLM-related proposals
  • Coordinate with the team lead and project teams to meet client and contractual needs
  • Ensure that all projects are delivered on-time, within scope, and within budget
  • Participate in virtual project-specific meetings

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in a related field (required)
  • Proficiency in Python, including experience with data processing, APIs, and basic ML workflows
  • Hands-on experience with Large Language Models, such as: prompt engineering, using LLM APIs, and/or fine-tuning or parameter-efficient tuning
  • Familiarity with NLP fundamentals (tokenization, embeddings, retrieval, evaluation metrics)
  • Fluenency in version control procedures with Git and Github/Gitlab, including creating/closing issues, creating/reviewing/merging pull requests, and good branch management
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Solid organizational skills including attention to detail and multitasking
  • Ability to ensure effective and efficient completion of activities and products to achieve project objectives
  • Contribute to proper documentation of procedures and processes of work
  • Ensure proper data documentation and management, especially on cloud-based platforms
  • Participate in project-specific meetings, especially on technical development
  • Experience in previous jobs, internships, or research projects is preferred

Application Deadline

Interviews will be on a rolling basis. Applications will be continuously reviewed until suitable candidates are identified.
