SIG is seeking an early-career Large Language Model (LLM)/ Natural Language Processing (NLP) Engineer to join our GeoAI team. The ideal candidate will be able to independently develop and help guide implementation of AI tools that support environmental research, decision support systems, and policy analytics. This role is ideal for a researcher or developer interested in applying natural language processing and large language models (LLMs) to Earth and environmental science domains. The LLM/NLP Engineer will design, implement, and evaluate language-based AI tools to advance environmental research and decision-making. Responsibilities include developing and fine-tuning LLM and NLP models tailored to geospatial, environmental, and policy datasets, as well as building pipelines for document processing, knowledge extraction, and semantic search across diverse sources such as scientific literature and spatial metadata. The engineer will contribute to frameworks for interpretable and responsible AI, collaborating closely with SIG scientists, data engineers, and remote sensing specialists to integrate NLP capabilities into decision-support workflows. Additionally, the role involves developing and deploying prototype AI-driven applications, such as environmental chatbots, document summarizers, and knowledge graph tools, that enhance access to and understanding of complex environmental information.
SIG’s projects are focused on codevelopment and prioritize the use of open-source data and tools. Therefore, familiarity with these frameworks is essential. Previous experience in projects involving climate change impact mitigation, forestry management, land cover mapping, geospatial technologies, precision agriculture, remote sensing, and GeoAI will be highly beneficial.
This position will be full-time and fully remote. However, candidates must be based in a United States-compatible time zone to ensure effective collaboration.
