Geospatial Data Scientist

The successful candidate will have the expertise and experience to work closely with a team of geospatial scientists and project managers in developing/adapting geospatial tools, aiding in capacity building activities for client groups, and completing other tasks related to GIS and remote sensing, and occasionally assisting with proposal development and/or project coordination. Proficiency with Google Earth Engine, GIS, and statistical analysis is highly preferred, and experience with environmentally focused mapping and forest management projects is beneficial. The position may involve occasional travel to engage with clients for workshops, when conditions permit.

This position is remote, but the successful candidate is required to live in Thailand. Candidates must already possess the unrestricted right to work in Thailand, such as Thai citizenship or a valid work permit. Please note that we are unable to provide visa sponsorship for this position.

Spatial Informatics Group, LLC (SIG), is an environmental think tank focused on solving complex environmental problems and taking unique solutions to market. Founded in 1998 by four PhD candidates, our group combines spatial analytics with ecological, social, and economic sciences to understand and quantify the impacts of management and policy choices on the short and long-term stability of ecosystems.

We specialize in capturing geospatial data using remote sensing technology, and offer services in environmental mapping, ecosystem quantification, forest management, forest carbon offsets, and fire risk management. Responsibilites

  • Work closely with a small team and various client groups on applied GIS/remote sensing analysis and reusable tool development in Google Earth Engine.
  • Provide technical support on training courses, workshops, and other capacity-building activities in the planning, delivery, and follow-up phases, as needed.
  • Ensure activities and products are completed effectively and efficiently to achieve project objectives.
  • Complete analysis using scripting and geospatial tools such as: Google Earth Engine (JavaScript and Python APIs), ArcGIS, QGIS, ENVI, R, Collect Earth Online, and SEPAL.
  • Ensure high-quality data and results using statistical analysis and QA/QC methods.
  • Contribute to the proper documentation of procedures and processes of work.
  • Ensure proper data documentation and management, especially on cloud-based platforms.
  • Participate in project-specific meetings, especially on technical development.
  • Document methods, results, and lessons learned for final reports and peer-reviewed published materials.
  • Interact with client groups worldwide via virtual meeting platforms.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Remote Sensing, GIS, Geography, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Work or research experience focused on geospatial applications.
  • Experience in Google Earth Engine, R, or other software/portals used for geospatial programming.
  • Experience with processing and analyzing satellite imagery.
  • Development and documentation in English is required.

Preferred Experience

  • Advanced programming skills in Python, JavaScript, or R.
  • Proficiency with ArcMap or QGIS.
  • Ability to learn new programming languages.
  • Experience in capacity building focused on geospatial applications in GIS and remote sensing.
  • Experience with using virtual machines (e.g., in GCP, AWS, Microsoft Azure).
  • Experience with accuracy assessment and area estimation.
  • Experience with deep machine learning and neural networks using TensorFlow.
  • Proficiency in at least one Southeast Asian language

PLANSCAPE PRODUCT MANAGER FOR SPATIAL INFORMATICS GROUP

Planscape is a free, open-science decision support platform built to maximize wildfire resilience by helping planners prioritize landscape treatments to mitigate wildfire risk, maximize ecological benefits, and help landscapes adapt to climate change. Planscape is a collaboration of federal and state agencies, philanthropists, academics and tribal organizations. SIG is the steward of the program.

We are looking for an experienced Product Manager to work on expansion of the Planscape platform. The person who fills this role can be located in US compatible time zones. Candidates don’t need to have a background in science, but preference will be given to those who share our interests in issues related to climate, forests, and geospatial science. This role is focused on the Planscape platform today. In the future this may evolve to support software projects across the company.

Responsibilities

  • Develop detailed product plan(s) to monitor and track progress of the many overlapping efforts of the Planscape Program
  • Assist in the definition of project scope and objectives, involving all relevant stakeholders and ensuring technical feasibility
  • Manage changes to the project scope, project schedule and project costs using appropriate verification techniques
  • Coordinate internal resources and third parties/vendors for the flawless execution of projects
  • Measure project performance using appropriate tools and techniques
  • Manage the relationship with the client and all stakeholders
  • Ensure that all projects are delivered on-time, within scope and within budget
  • Report and escalate to management as needed

Requirements

  • Proven passion for the application of science to achieve a more sustainable world
  • 5-7 years experience managing the development of complex products using agile methodologies
  • Experience scoping and delivering web applications with complex, relational databases and powerful visualization tools
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Bachelor’s Degree in appropriate field of study or equivalent work experience

Recommended

  • Certified ScrumMaster Certification, or equivalent certification
  • Experience at an environmental consulting firm or environmental/geospatial focused software company/start-up
  • Experience with scientific decision support tools and web mapping products

GEOSPATIAL LEAD ANALYST (GOOGLE CLOUD AND EARTH ENGINE) FOR SPATIAL INFORMATICS GROUP

We have a newly-created full-time position of Technical Lead, Geospatial & Cloud (GEE). The person who fills this role can be located anywhere in the United States or compatible time zones.

This role contributes technical leadership for SIG’s Google Earth Engine (GEE)–based analysis, tools, and cloud workflows, with responsibility for technical design decisions, implementation approaches, and alignment across projects. The position is hands-on and focused on designing, implementing, and maintaining GEE and Google Cloud–based solutions, while also guiding technical approaches across projects and supporting other geospatial staff.

Week-to-week activities will include geospatial analysis and programming, workflow and methodology design, cloud resource planning, technical review, and coordination with product management, research teams, and external partners.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain geospatial analysis workflows and reusable tools in Google Earth Engine (JavaScript and Python APIs).
  • Coordinate technical design and implementation of GEE- and GCP-based projects, contributing to architectural patterns, implementation approaches, and quality standards.
  • Provide technical guidance and review for GEE scripts, methodologies, and cloud-based geospatial workflows in collaboration with other team members.
  • Support Google Cloud infrastructure planning and management for geospatial projects, including performance and cost considerations.
  • Provide Google Cloud technical expertise in support of SIG’s Google Cloud Partnership; professional certification will be required within one year if not already held.
  • Collaborate with product management and project leads to translate analytical and client requirements into robust technical implementations.
  • Support proposal development and partner discussions through technical scoping, methodology descriptions, and feasibility assessments.
  • Contribute to documentation of methods, workflows, and best practices for GEE and cloud-based geospatial analysis.

Requirements

  • At least 4 years of relevant experience in geospatial programming, remote sensing, or cloud-based spatial analysis (required).
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in a relevant field (required).
  • Extensive experience with Google Earth Engine (JavaScript and Python APIs) (required).
  • Preference given to candidates who already hold Professional GCP Certification.
  • Experience providing technical guidance within a geospatial or analytical team.
  • Experience designing and implementing geospatial workflows on Google Cloud Platform.
  • Strong understanding of remote sensing, spatial data processing, and geospatial analysis methods.
  • Experience with additional geospatial tools and platforms (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS, R, Python).
  • Experience with applied machine learning in geospatial contexts.
  • Passion for climate- and environment-related issues

LLM Developer (early-career) - Environmental Mapping Team

SIG is seeking an early-career Large Language Model (LLM)/ Natural Language Processing (NLP) Engineer to join our GeoAI team. The ideal candidate will be able to independently develop and help guide implementation of AI tools that support environmental research, decision support systems, and policy analytics. This role is ideal for a researcher or developer interested in applying natural language processing and large language models (LLMs) to Earth and environmental science domains. The LLM/NLP Engineer will design, implement, and evaluate language-based AI tools to advance environmental research and decision-making. Responsibilities include developing and fine-tuning LLM and NLP models tailored to geospatial, environmental, and policy datasets, as well as building pipelines for document processing, knowledge extraction, and semantic search across diverse sources such as scientific literature and spatial metadata. The engineer will contribute to frameworks for interpretable and responsible AI, collaborating closely with SIG scientists, data engineers, and remote sensing specialists to integrate NLP capabilities into decision-support workflows. Additionally, the role involves developing and deploying prototype AI-driven applications, such as environmental chatbots, document summarizers, and knowledge graph tools, that enhance access to and understanding of complex environmental information.

SIG’s projects are focused on codevelopment and prioritize the use of open-source data and tools. Therefore, familiarity with these frameworks is essential. Previous experience in projects involving climate change impact mitigation, forestry management, land cover mapping, geospatial technologies, precision agriculture, remote sensing, and GeoAI will be highly beneficial.

This position will be full-time and fully remote. However, candidates must be based in a United States-compatible time zone to ensure effective collaboration.

Responsibilities

  • Design, test, and iterate on human-centered and responsible LLM-powered tools and workflows to support environmental research, analysis, and decision-making
  • Build pipelines for document processing, knowledge extraction, and semantic search from diverse sources (scientific literature, reports, and spatial metadata) using retrieval-augmented generation or other knowledge access frameworks.
  • Integrate LLMs into applications, notebooks, or internal tools using APIs and open-source models
  • Assist with fine-tuning or adapting models for domain-specific use cases
  • Evaluate data quality and help identify gaps or biases in training and reference data
  • Test LLM outputs for accuracy, consistency, bias, and usability
  • Develop robust evaluation frameworks (manual reviews, benchmark prompts, automated checks)
  • Document data sources and processing steps to support reproducibility
  • Assist in the definition of project scopes and objectives, ensuring technical and timeline feasibility on LLM-related proposals
  • Coordinate with the team lead and project teams to meet client and contractual needs
  • Ensure that all projects are delivered on-time, within scope, and within budget
  • Participate in virtual project-specific meetings

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in a related field (required)
  • Proficiency in Python, including experience with data processing, APIs, and basic ML workflows
  • Hands-on experience with Large Language Models, such as: prompt engineering, using LLM APIs, and/or fine-tuning or parameter-efficient tuning
  • Familiarity with NLP fundamentals (tokenization, embeddings, retrieval, evaluation metrics)
  • Fluenency in version control procedures with Git and Github/Gitlab, including creating/closing issues, creating/reviewing/merging pull requests, and good branch management
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Solid organizational skills including attention to detail and multitasking
