SIG Brings Together Data from More than a Dozen Federal and California State Agencies to Improve WIldfire and Landscape Resiliency

SIG developed a free, open science dashboard that combines wildfire and landscape resilience project information from over a dozen different state and federal agencies. The dashboard provides a broad overview of statewide information, including summary statistics, and also allows users to drill down to specific projects along a number of different dimensions.

Lots of Data in Lots of Places

California state and federal agencies had a lot of data pertinent to wildfire and landscape resilience, but it was siloed and largely not interoperable. This was a significant impediment to addressing the increasingly intense wildfire seasons in California: besides making it difficult for agencies to remain aware of each others’ activities, it limited public transparency into agency operations.

Pulling it Together

Spatial Informatics Group collated and parsed data from more than a dozen agencies, including California agencies like CAL FIRE, State Parks, and the Department of Fish and Game plus federal agencies like the Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, and the National Park Service. Pulling together data from these disparate sources was no mean feat since the data was not standardized and was maintained in often legacy systems that required intensive engagement and transformation by SIG’s experts.

Open Science for All

As part of SIG’s commitment to open science, as well as government transparency rules, we made the California Interagency Treatment Dashboard freely available to anyone with a web browser and internet connection.

The Dashboard, now open on SIG’s GIT, is one of SIG’s most-used tools. It has been a game changer in coordinating statewide forest wildfire and landscape resilience activities, and is an important tool for practitioners throughout the state.
