Contractor, Environmental Mapping

Brian Perlman is a researcher and analyst focused on remote sensing for human rights investigations and humanitarian contexts. His work primarily focuses on satellite-based remote sensing methods to study armed conflict, civilian protection, and International Humanitarian Law. His previous work has focused on conflict in the Gaza Strip, Lebanon, Ukraine, Russia, Sudan, Iran, and elsewhere. He has co-authored two peer-reviewed publications, serving as first author on a journal article concerning WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene) infrastructure damage in Gaza. Brian is a former Fulbright scholar, an FAA-licensed commercial airplane pilot and drone pilot, and a military veteran. He is a member of the Decentralized Damage Mapping Group (an inter-institutional research group led by Dr. Jamon Van Den Hoek of Oregon State University) and the NASA Lifelines Earth Science Review Board.

Brian holds a master’s degree in journalism from the University of California, Berkeley, and a master’s degree in Geospatial Intelligence from Johns Hopkins University.
