The Global Environment Centre (GEC), supported by SIG, was contracted by IFAD to support the development of a USD $30M project design in Indonesia. The project aims to improve the sustainable management within peatland ecosystems and approaches this from an institutional support, community development, forest management and wildfire perspective. The project team comprised leading personnel in peatland management, community development, environmental economics and wildfire management.

The project once approved by both GEF and the Indonesian Government will focus activities on the Island of Sumatra surrounding the Kerumatan National Park in Southern Riau province.
Sig hopes to continue to support the design of peatland sustainability projects with the ambition of reducing the GHG emissions associated with peatland forest clearing and fires.
SIG continues to work closely with GEC as a regional peatland and wetland NGO and expert group in sustainable peatland management.
